Introduction

يهدف مشروع "خطى الصوت" إلى سبر الرؤى والأحلام الشفهية للأشخاص الذين يعيشون في مدينة أبوظبي على إختلاف مشاربهم ومحاولة تقاطعها ودمجها مع رؤية أبوظبي 2030 في محاولة لإستعادة سحر همسات الموروث الشفهي المحلي لأبوظبي ودلالاته الحسية، والعمل على جمعها معا في خطاب فني عالي التقنية تصميميا من خلال إستخدام أحدث برامج التصميم لتحليل الموجات الصوتية وتحويلها لأشكال مرئية تساعدنا على إستخلاص التصميم منها، ومحلياً تقليدياً في التصنيع من خلال إختيار الصلصال الإمارتي كمادة للتنفيذ، عدا إن إختياري لوضعها على شاطىء البحر كمكان أمثل لتركيبها وتركيب الحساسات الصوتية والضؤية فيها، وهو المكان الذي تندمج فيه جميع الأصوات لتبدع تفاعلاً مسموعا ومرئيا مميزاً وفريداً من نوعه.

Sound Steps aims to capture the oral visions and dreams of all the people living in Abu Dhabi City and merge them with the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. It is an attempt to regain the magical whispers of the local oral heritage of Abu Dhabi with its sensual connotations and merge them together. The latest hi-tech design software capable of analyzing sound waves and transforming them into visual forms is used to help derive the installation’s design. And the local Emirati clay is chosen as the main element of the construction of the installation. The Sound Steps installation with its sound and light sensors is located at the sea front—a perfect place where all sounds can be merged to create a unique audible and visual interaction.

بعد تسجيل أكثر من 100 حلم لأشخاص مقيمين في مدينة أبوظبي، قمت باختيار أفضل حلم لإدراجه في مشروعي. بالنظر إلى الحقائق المذكورة أعلاه، قمت بتقسيم الأشخاص الذين قابلتهم إلى ثلاث مجموعات رئيسية، وهي كما يلي:

المجموعة الأولى: آسيا

المجموعة الثانية: الاتحاد الأوروبي والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية

المجموعة الثالثة: الدول العربية

لقد بدأت تحليل كل حلم قمت بتسجيله، وقراءة موجته وطيفه الصوتي باستخدام برامج خاصة، وتمثل هذه الصور جميع الموجات الصوتية الـ 15 للأحلام التي قمت باختيارها، وقد جاءت النتائج البصرية مثيرة جدا للاهتمام، وبطبيعة الحال شكلت بالنسبة لي مصدر وحي كبير للعمل بموجبها.

After recording over 100 dreams of the people in Abu Dubai, I had to select the best ones to include in my project. I worked towards dividing the people into 3 main groups:

Group 1: Asia

Group 2: European Union and USA

Group 3: Arab Countries

I started to analyze each recorded dream and to read its sound wave and spectrum using a special software. The resulting images presented all the sound waves of the 15 dreams selected. The visual results were very interesting and, for sure, very inspiring to work on.

عملية التصميم

Design Process

أما الخطوة التالية فتتمثل في العمل على تحليل هذه الصور، ومحاولة ابتكار نموذج أو صيغة مدمجة استناداً إلى خطوط وأحجام أطياف الأصوات، ومن ثم الخوض في عملية تصميم مثيرة للانتقال بهذه التصورات من العالم ثنائي الأبعاد إلى التصميم الفراغي ضمن عالم ثلاثي الأبعاد.

قمت باختيار جهاز رسم الطيف لإعادة تشكيل الصوت، فهو يقدم صورة واحدة تجمع جميع الأصوات الواردة في التسجيل، كما أن عملية إعادة التشكيل هذه تعطي تمثيلاً متميزاً لطبيعة الفراغ المحدد بالمقابلة، وهو ما يجعله جهازاً رائعاً ومناسباً للعمل الذي أقوم به.

خلال هذا المشروع، يلعب جهاز رسم الطيف دوراً رئيسياً في رسم الخرائط الفراغية للصوت، وبالتالي يصبح الجهاز بحد ذاته موقع عمل المشروع، فهو يجسد مفهوم خريطة الفراغ الصوتي. حالما يتم تحديد الموقع، لا بد من العمل على ترجمته وتفسيره، ويتم ذلك من خلال رسم الخرائط على ورقة شبكة "تقليدية"، حيث يتم توزيعه بدقة ونقاء ضمن حدود وأبعاد الصورة، وعندها يصبح بالإمكان تطبيق هذه الشبكة على جهاز رسم الطيف، وتوحيد ما بدا للوهلة الأولى وكأنه مزيج غريب من الأصوات البشرية والأحلام.

وثمة خطوة أخرى تستند على تحليل رموز الصورة، حيث يتم اختيار نموذج الألوان الرئيسية "RGB" لاستنباط المعلومات من جهاز رسم الطيف، الذي يقوم باستخراج قيم الألوان الرئيسة "RGB" عند كل نقطة تقاطع على الشبكة. وعليه، فقد استطعنا الحصول من الصوت الأصلي على مجموعة قيم لبيانات الألوان الرئيسية "RGB"، التي يتم تغذيتها في تطبيق تجسيد الأجسام ثلاثية الأبعاد الشهير "Rhino Grasshopper"، والذي يستخدم لنمذجة وتصنيع العناصر. هنا ستخضع البيانات للمعالجة من قبل التطبيق، من أجل إعادة صياغتها وتشكيلها ضمن عالم ثلاثي الأبعاد، بالإضافة إلى توجيهها لتمثيل فكرة مستخلصة من الواقع.

هذا ويتيح تطبيق "Rhino Grasshopper" للمصمم إمكانية التحكم بطريقة معالجة جزء كبير من الخطوط وفقاً لتوجهاته وميوله، كما هو الحال مع الحدود المادية التي يبدأ المشروع باتخاذها تدريجياً. ولكن القيم المتولدة وطريقة ربطها مع بعضها البعض تعتمد على منبعها وعلى درجة تسجيل أصوات الأشخاص وأحلامهم، وبالتالي فإنه بالإمكان اقتفاء مسار أصداء الصوت التي خرجت منه. وبموجب هذه الحقيقة، فإنه توجد مساحة واسعة لعملية المعالجة، التي تستند بطريقة أو بأخرى على تتبع أثر الماضي، وفي الوقت نفسه ابتكار صوت مستقبلي.

The next step was to go through these images and to try to create a merging form based on the sounds' spectrum lines and volumes, an exciting design process from 2D lines and colors to 3D spatial design.

A spectrograph is selected as the representation of the sound. Spectrographs bring together in a single image all sound contained in the recording. Its representation is already bestowed with a certain spatial quality that makes it a very interesting form with which to work.

In the project, the spectrograph is considered a cartography to the space of sound, therefore becoming the site of the project. It is the map of the sound space. Once the site is given, it needs to be rationalised and apprehended. This is done by rationalizing and appropriating this cartography through a "traditional" grid. Distributed purely out of the image constraints and dimensions, now it is possible to apply this grid to all spectrographs, unifying what at first glance seemed like an odd amalgam of human voices and dreams.

A further step, to decode the image. RGB colour space is chosen to extract information from the spectrographs. At every cross of the grid, RGB values are extracted. From an original sound, now there is an array of RGB data values. This array is fed into Rhino Grasshopper, a 3D application used for the modeling and manufacturing of objects. Here the data will be exposed to manipulations. In the realm of 3D manufacturing, dimensioning becomes imperative, steering an abstraction towards reality.

The manipulations in Rhino Grasshopper are as much part to do with the designer’s whim as with the limits of the materiality that the project is gradually taking. But the generated values and the way they relate to each other indicate their origin and the recording of peoples’ voices and dreams. It is therefore possible to retrace the steps to the sound they come from. Under this reassurance, a freedom to manipulate is somehow granted through the anchoring to the past, while at the same time creating a future.

يهدف مشروع "خطوات الصوت" لتقديم الهوية التراثية المحلية لأبوظبي من خلال دمجها مع رؤية أبوظبي 2030، فقد حاولت نسج التراث الشفهي المحلي لأبوظبي مع الرؤى والأحلام الشفهية الواقعية لجميع الأشخاص الذين يعيشون في هذه المدينة. وقد شكل التراث الشفهي الغني لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، بالإضافة إلى الأغاني والأصوات القادمة من عبق الماضي، كأغاني النساء اللاتي يترقبن عودة أزواجهن البحارة من وراء البحار، والدعاء من أجل غد أكثر ازدهاراً، مصدر إلهام رئيسياً لتجسيد مشروع "خطوات الصوت". وقد ارتأينا أن نعتمد الواجهة البحرية مكاناً أمثل لتركيب حساسات الصوت فيها، وهو المكان الذي تندمج فيه جميع الأصوات لتبدع تفاعلاً مميزاً وفريداً من نوعه.

وباستخدام الصلصال كعنصر تشكيل رئيس لبناء وصياغة ما ستنقله المجسّات الصوتية وأجهزة الاستشعار، فإنه سيشكل القيم المستدامة لهذا العمل، كما سيساعد الطين الذي يعتبر مادة متوفرة محلياً على ابتكار نظام التبريد، وذلك بسبب الرطوبة وحالة الطقس الخاصة التي تتمتع بها المدينة. هذا ومن الجدير بالذكر أن مدينة أبوظبي تحاول أن تبرز على مستوى المنطقة في مجال توليد الطاقة النظيفة والمدن المستدامة، كما يحاول مشروع "خطوات الصوت" نقل هذه القيم إلى المجتمع.

Sound Steps aims to present the local traditional identity of Abu Dhabi while merging it with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. I’ve attempted to weave the local oral heritage of Abu Dhabi with the actual oral visions and dreams of all the people living in this city. The rich oral heritage of the UAE, the songs and sounds of the past - the songs of women in the seaside waiting for their sailors to return from the high seas and praying for a more prosperous tomorrow - is the main inspiration of the Sound Steps installation. We decided that the sea front would be the best location for the installation—a place where all sounds can be merged to create a unique interaction.

Using clay as a main element of the construction of the installation transfers the sustainability values of the work. The clay as a local material will also help to create a cooling system due to the humidity and the special weather conditions in the city. Abu Dhabi is trying to lead the region in clean energy and sustainable cities and Sound Steps attempts to convey these values to the society.
