يقع مركز حمدان في وسط الحشود التي تعمر الطرقات طوال اليوم. وبحلول الليل، تضاء مخازنه وفندقه مستقطبةً شرائح جديدة من الحشود. ويعد المركز واحداً من مراكز التسوق الطليعة في المنطقة التجارية في أبوظبي، حيث أنه يلبّي وظيفة تجارية في الطابق الأول الضخم، ووظيفة سكنية في الأبراج الأربعة الأصلية. كما أنه يشتمل على فندق في البرج الخامس، ويوفر جواً اجتماعياً يبعث الراحة والألفة إلى النفس.
إنه من الصعب أن تضل طريقك إلى مركز حمدان. فبينما تسير في شارع حمدان، وحالما ترى بناءً كبيراً يشبه السفينة، فاعلم حينها أنك قد وصلت إلى وجهتك. وترتفع فوق القاعدة، خمسة أبراج شاهقة الطول، حيث يظهر تصميم المركز الأصلي واضحاً في أربعة منها، بينما ازدان البرج الخامس، منذ وقت قريب، بكسوة من الزجاج الأزرق الداكن. ويعتبرهذا البرج الخامس جزءً لا يتجزأ من مركز حمدان، على أن الكثيرين يظنون، مخطئين، أنه بناء منفصل. تتألف قاعدة المبنى من أربعة طوابق، يقع فيها مركز التسوق، والمكاتب، بما في ذلك مكاتب مركز الأعمال العالمي، والذي يدير المبنى حالياً. ويضم المبنى أيضا مطعماً عالمياً للوجبات السريعة، ومطعماً سعودياً آخر للوجبات السريعة أيضاً.

It lies in the middle of the crowd throughout the day and, as night falls, its stores and hotel light up and attract a different crowd. One of the first shopping centers in the commercial district of Abu Dhabi, the Hamdan Center caters to commercial functions (the large base), residential functions (the four original towers), includes a hotel (the fifth tower), and provides for an informal social atmosphere.
Hamdan Center is hard to miss. While walking down Hamdan Street, if you encounter a large ship-like structure, you have reached your destination. Above the base are five high-rise towers, four of which show the center’s original design, whereas the fifth one was recently clad in dark blue glass. Although it could be mistaken as a separate building, it is part of the Hamdan Center. The four-floor base of the building includes a shopping center and offices, including the offices of the Global Business Center, the current building manager. The building also houses an international fast food chain and a Saudi fast food spot.
تضم قاعدة المبنى محلات تجارية، واقعة تحت هياكل خرسانية بيضاء بارزة، والتي ترخي ظلالها، وتتلاعب بالرياح، رافعةً أسماء المحلات الواقعة هناك. ويُظهر المبنى فوقها أشكالاً متكررة من اصطفافات الطوب. وتبدو الشرفات المكعبة بارزة من زوايا كل مبنى، وهي مفصولة عن النوافذ بواسطة خط عمودي من ألواح الطوب الأبيض. وتُظهر المداخل الرئيسية في الجزء الأمامي والخلفي من المبنى، لوحة من الزجاج الأزرق، ومعها زجاج أرجواني على شكل الماسة، والذي عكس فيما مضى الضوء القادم من قائمة الأفلام المعروضة في سينما الماسة. غير أنه في يومنا هذا، تفتقد هذه الماسة قطعاً من زجاجها، كما أن السينما توقفت عن العمل منذ مدة طويلة.
إن التجول في جنبات مركز حمدان، يجلب إلى الذاكرة كيف كانت أبوظبي في أواخر التسعينات، وأوائل الألفية الجديدة. وتتزاحم أقدام الناس، زاخرة بحيوية متجر التخفيضات هناك. تعتبر المناطق المحيطة به بمثابة أماكن تجمع غير رسمية للعمالة الوافدة من الذكور. وتبدو الأبراج السكنية لمركز حمدان ذات شعبية كبيرة. ابتسم البواب قبل أن أسأله أيَّ سؤال، وقال لي: "إنها مليئة! لا توجد أية غرف شاغرة!" ويكتظ المكان خلال النهار، بالمتسوقين الذين يمارسون مهاراتهم في مساومة الأسعار. في حقيقة الأمر، يعتبر المركز أحد آخر الأماكن التي يمكن فيها المفاصلة على الأسعار في المدينة. وفي البرج الخامس، يضجّ فندق ميركيور نوفوتيل مفعماً بالحياة ليلاً، وذلك عندما يتحول المكان فجأة إلى حي "ذوات الرايات الحمراء" في أبوظبي.
The base of the building houses the shops under protruding white concrete structures that provide shade, channel the wind, and carry the shops’ names. Above it, the building exhibits the repetitive patterns of its brick alignments. Cubic balconies protrude from the corners of each building, separated from the windows by a vertical line of white brick panels. The main entrances at the front and back of the building display a blue glass panel with a purple diamond shaped glass that once reflected the light from the list of films showing at Al-Massa Cinema. Today this diamond is losing pieces of its glass, and the cinema board is long gone.
Walking around Hamdan Center reminds me of how Abu Dhabi was in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The building exudes the crowded liveliness of a thrift store. Its surroundings are informal meeting places for male migrant workers. The Hamdan Center’s residential towers seem very popular. Even before I asked the doorman any questions, he smiled and told me, "It’s full! No more rooms!" During the day, the place is filled with shoppers practicing their bargaining skills—this is one of the last places where they can do so in the city. In the fifth tower, the Mercure Novotel breathes life at night, when the block suddenly turns into Abu Dhabi’s Red Light District.
